Blazing the trail: Australians nominated for Academy Awards in several categories

On 13 March 2023, the 95th Academy Awards will celebrate the past year in film and Australia is once again well-represented at Hollywood’s night of nights.

An Ostrich Told Me …

Brisbane-born animator and filmmaker Lachlan Pendragon is nominated for Best Animated Short Film for An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It. He won Best Australian Short at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival.

Tár

In her eighth Academy Award nomination, Cate Blanchett is once again nominated for Best Actress for her role in psychological drama Tár. 

Elvis

Elvis has been nominated in eight categories at the 2023 awards including for Best Picture and Baz Luhrmann for Best Director. Alongside Luhrmann, multiple other Australians are nominated for their work on the film, including: 

  • Mandy Walker for Best Cinematography
  • Catherine Martin, Karen Murphy and Beverley Dunn for Best Production Design
  • Catherine Martin for Best Costume Design 
  • Matt Villa for Best Film Editing
  • David Lee and Wayne Pashley for Best Sound
  • Jason Baird for Best Makeup and Hairstyling
