MDW projects premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024

Our projects span romance, drama, comedy, drama, biopic, and more

The 49th Toronto International Film Festival 2024 (TIFF) recently came to a close, and we’re delighted that our entertainment law team provided legal services to six projects that premiered at the Festival.

TIFF ran from 5 to 15 of September 2024 in Toronto, Canada.

It is yet another accomplishment for MDW’s entertainment law team after a number of films they worked on premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) in August 2024.

The projects include:

Eden

The hotly anticipated historical thriller Eden boasts a star-studded cast including Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Anna de Armas and Sydney Sweeney. Directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, the film follows an ensemble of European settlers who seek to set up their own paradise in the uninhabited Galápagos Islands. However, their solitude is short-lived when the bourgeois values they had hoped to escape follow them to their new lives.

Eden is suspenseful, intriguing and brings a new perspective to the dream of finding paradise.

Went up the Hill

Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Bergman Island) and Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) star in Sam Van Grinsven’s deeply atmospheric ghost story, Went up the Hill.

The film explores themes of grief, abuse, and loss amid the breathtaking backdrop of New Zealand’s South Island. Krieps and Montgomery give chilling performances with shades of madness and mania. The film takes place in the shadows, both narratively and visually, offering a dark reimagining of the children’s nursery rhyme, Jack and Jill.

Addition

The romantic dramedy Addition is directed by Marcelle Lunam and features Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, The Choice) and Joe Dempsie (Skins, Game of Thrones).

It focuses on a mathematician who struggles to balance her arithmomania with a budding romance. Lunam gives an insightful perspective on the difficulties of living with obsessive-compulsive disorder while offering a heartwarming narrative celebrating self-acceptance and the important things in life.

Better Man

If you’re on the hunt for your next music biopic, look no further than Robbie William’s Better Man directed by Michael Gracey. Gracey is no stranger to the genre, having previously been a producer on the acclaimed Elton John biopic Rocketman.

With vibrant music, artistic visuals and stellar casting, this film creates an experience for viewers like no other.

The Wolves Always Come at Night

An emotional gut-punch is offered by the heartbreaking hybrid film The Wolves Always Come at Night. Seamlessly blending elements of documentary with fiction, Gabrielle Brady captures the emotional rupture and devastating impact of urban migration through the lens of Mongolian herders.

Brady offers a view of climate change which is fundamentally grounded in the human experience.

Thou Shalt Not Steal

The dark comedy Thou Shalt Not Steal is an eight-episode miniseries. It follows Sherry Lee Watson as Robyn, a young Aboriginal delinquent who reluctantly teams up with awkward teenager, Gidge (Will McDonald). Robyn escapes from detention in search of a family secret.

Together, Robyn and Gidge flee their small central desert community on a perilous journey across the outback. Filled with iconic road trip locations through the central strip of Australia, the series showcases South Australia’s stunning outback landscapes.

The final word

We’re proud to have contributed to a diverse range of projects showcased at TIFF and look forward to witnessing their continuing success at other international festivals.
